Financial Support Timeline Guide

There are a variety of financial supports, resources and information to help you during your academic journey. The timeline guides below highlight funding opportunities and financial information you can reference throughout the year so you know what is available and when to apply.

Undergraduate Students

  • Look for employment and use the summer months to save for the upcoming school year. Visit the Financial Literacy page for tools on building a budget for the upcoming year, managing debt and spending choices. 
  • Summer is a great time to pursue extracurricular activities that may lead to future scholarships. Look out for opportunities to get involved in your community and develop your leadership skills. 
  • Government student loan applications for domestic students typically open in June/July for the upcoming Fall/Winter semesters. 
    • Check out the Student Loans 101 workshops and video guides to learn how to navigate the application and find out how to apply for non-repayable grant funding. Workshops are offered each July and August.
  • Applications for the Jason Lang Scholarship & Louise McKinney Scholarships open in August for residents of Alberta. 
  • International students who are experiencing an unanticipated financial shortfall, and have an outstanding balance from the previous year on their account, can apply for an International Supplementary Bursary in August through the Application for Financial Support. 
  • Schedule an appointment with International Education and Enrolment(IEE) for  personalized advising on financial questions, as well as study and work permit requirements. 

  • Check your tuition balance. Your government student loans and any scholarships you receive may pay for some, if not all,  of your tuition and fees. Be sure to check your Bear Tracks account before the deadline each term to view your student account for any balance owing. 
    • For a full list of ways to pay, visit Tuition Payment Options.
    • If you have a credit on your account, a refund of those funds can be sent to you through PayMyTuition. For details on how to set up and receive your funds, visit the Refund and Withdrawals page. 
  • Supplementary Bursary Applications open Oct. 1 and close April 15. This program supports students experiencing a financial shortfall for academic and basic living costs. 
  • Applications for undergraduate scholarships and awards will open near the start of the Winter term. You only need to fill out one application  to be considered for a variety of academic scholarship and leadership award opportunities. 
  • Registration for Spring/Summer courses opens in February each year, and the student loans application typically opens around the same time. 

Graduate Students

  • Scholarships and Awards for graduate students are offered through the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, with deadlines throughout the summer. Spend some time exploring the many funding options available.

  • Summer is a great time to pursue extracurricular activities that may lead to future scholarships. Look out for opportunities to get involved in your community and develop your leadership skills.   • Government student loan applications typically open in June/July for the upcoming Fall/Winter semesters.

  • The First Nations, Métis and Inuit Awards application opens in February.  Deadlines vary so check the website for each award deadline.

  • The Indigenous Students' Support Fund is available for First Nation, Métis or Inuit peoples of Canada needing emergency financial support. This fund is managed strictly for First Nation, Métis, or Inuit students who may be experiencing an immediate financial crisis and need to access money quickly. Funding can be accessed once per academic year.
    • First People's House has additional information on financial supports and advising, especially if you are experiencing funding barriers (immediate or long-term).
