Jason Lang Scholarship + Louise McKinney Scholarship
The Jason Lang Scholarship and the Louise McKinney Scholarship recognizes and rewards the outstanding academic achievements of Alberta post-secondary students and encourages them to continue in their undergraduate or professional programs of study. This scholarship program is funded by the Government of Alberta through Alberta Advanced Education and administered by the University of Alberta, in conjunction with Alberta Student Aid.
Jason Lang Scholarship
Value: $1,000
Louise McKinney Scholarship
Value: $2,500.
To be considered for the Louise McKinney Scholarship, applicants must apply by the Fall Application Deadline.
Students can only get one of these two scholarships each year. The Louise McKinney Scholarship only has a few available. If students apply for it but do not win, we will automatically check to see if they can get the Jason Lang Scholarship instead.
Deadlines
July 15 – Application Opens
- Applications for the next cycle open on July 15.
September 15 – Fall Application Deadline
- Applications submitted prior to September 15 will be assessed at this time.
January 15 – Winter Application Deadline
- Applications submitted between September 16 and January 15 will be assessed at this time.
Eligibility
Candidates must:
- Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada, or Protected Person within the meaning of subsection 95 (2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada).
- Be an Alberta resident and to be considered an Alberta resident one of the following conditions must apply:
- One parent, or legal guardian has maintained permanent residence in Canada for at least 12 consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies and be residing in Alberta, or
- Alberta is the last place the student has lived for 12 consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies, or
- The student’s spouse/partner has maintained permanent residence in Alberta for 12 consecutive months prior to the person attending post-secondary.
- Be enrolled full-time in the second or subsequent year of an undergraduate degree or professional program at an eligible publicly funded post-secondary institution in Alberta, and
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.5 between September to April of the previous academic year at an eligible publicly funded Alberta post-secondary institution.
- Have completed at least 80% of a full-normal course load (i.e. at least 24 units of course weight for most programs) between September to April of the previous academic year at an eligible publicly funded Alberta post-secondary institution
Transfer students will be assessed for the Jason Lang Scholarship by the institution they are currently attending and are encouraged to apply by the Fall Application Deadline. Transfer students are not eligible for the Louise McKinney Scholarship.
Co-op work terms, WKEXP work terms, and practicum terms will not be included, but co-op students will be assessed based on paired academic terms. It is recommended that co-op students apply each year and Student Financial Support will determine your eligibility.
Students who participated in an official University of Alberta exchange should apply and Student Financial Support will determine your eligibility.
Please note that the minimum GPA requirement has changed from 3.2 to 3.5 for Fall 2025 and subsequent semesters.

How to Apply
Apply online via Awards Hub prior to the posted deadline.
- Complete the General Application section in the My Applications tab.
- In the Opportunities tab, enter Jason Lang in the search field and click APPLY. Click on Finish to submit your application.
Once you apply for the Jason Lang Scholarship, you will also be considered for the Louise McKinney Scholarship, as they both use the same application.
Notification
You will be notified by Student Financial Support approximately one month after each deadline date as to whether or not you have been nominated.
