Read more about Dr. Petar Minev:
Petar received his MSc (1986) and PhD (1991) from the University of Sofia and joined ourdepartment in 1998. He retired in 2023 and started a three-year phased post-retirement.
Throughout his career, Petar made significant contributions to applied mathematics, particularly
in numerical methods for partial differential equations, computational fluid dynamics, and the
simulation of complex flows. His work on high-order numerical schemes and splitting methods
for the Navier-Stokes equations has had a lasting impact on the field.
Petar was also a dedicated and highly respected teacher. He taught a wide range of
undergraduate and graduate courses, including differential equations, numerical analysis, and
computational fluid dynamics, and was especially committed to teaching engineering students.
Many of his former students have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry,
reflecting his strong mentorship and guidance.
In addition to his research and teaching, Peter contributed extensively to service within the
department and the broader community. He served in numerous departmental roles, including
as Associate Chair for Graduate Studies; chaired the Alberta High School Mathematics
Competition (AHSMC) Committee; and was actively involved in organizing conferences and
workshops, including the annual meeting of the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics
Society (CAIMS).
Petar will be remembered as a kind, thoughtful, and generous colleague who cared deeply
about his students and the academic community. His contributions to the department and to the
field of applied mathematics will have a lasting legacy.
