Curriculum

Students registered in the Internationally Trained Legal Professionals (ITLP) Program are considered National Committee on Accreditation Special Students and take courses for credit to fulfill NCA requirements. These credits do not lead toward a degree or diploma at the University of Alberta or any other institution.

Terms

The program runs through three terms (Fall Term, Winter Term, and Spring Term) that starts in September and concludes in June.

Core Requirements

Students earn the Post-Bachelor’s Certificate upon successful completion of the following six courses:

• LAW 420 – Criminal Law ITLP
• LAW 435 – Constitutional Law ITLP
• LAW 450 – Administrative Law ITLP
• LAW 456 – Professionalism & Ethics ITLP
• LAW 599 – Legal Research & Writing ITLP

Students are also required to take the Indigenous Canada MOOC.

ADDITIONAL COURSEWORK

Students’ individual NCA assessment may mean that they are required to take courses with JD students beyond the six mandatory requirements in order to receive their Certificate of Qualification (CQ). While completion of these courses is not necessary to graduate with the Post-Bachelor’s Certificate, students are eligible to enroll in them while enrolled in the Post-Bachelor’s Certificate and receive their Certificate of Qualification (CQ).

Course Registration + Enrollment Limits

Students may register in a maximum of 10 courses or 35-37 credits (whichever comes first) within an academic year. Some exceptions may apply.

Not every NCA candidate receives the same assigned courses. Enrollment is dependent on your NCA Assessment Report which can also come with a list of recommended courses (as listed above) from the NCA. Some recommended courses may be a requirement. Recommended courses are subject to availability.

*The Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED) offers modules through their Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP) to assist with completion of certain assignments. PREP is required to complete post-education in order to practice law within Canada. Two modules, specifically for Legal Research and Writing (implemented in 2022), and for Indigenous Peoples in the Law (implemented in 2026), can be completed through CPLED and meet your NCA Assessment Report requirements.
