Foundations of Canadian Law

LAW 201: Foundations of Canadian Law is a comprehensive course designed specifically for non-law students who want to understand the law better. Is This Program for You?

LAW 201 is built for curious minds and ambitious professionals. With this fully online course, you can work at your own pace. You are a perfect fit if you are:

  • A U of A undergraduate who wants to broaden your degree or is test-driving the idea of applying to law school.
  • A student completing your degree at another institution who wants a competitive edge for law school applications or foundational knowledge of the Canadian legal system.
  • A working professional or lifelong learner with at least one year of undergraduate education and the desire to better understand how the Canadian legal landscape impacts your specific industry, profession, or your day-to-day life.

Note: This course is designed for non-law students, working professionals and lifelong learners; it is not available to students currently enrolled in a J.D. program.

An examination of the role the law plays in protecting rights in Canadian society, including the rights of individuals and marginalized groups. Topics may include due process, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, human rights legislation, and protections in criminal law and family law. Not available to students in the J.D. program.
