Admissions
Internationally Trained Legal Professionals (ITLP) Program applicants are encouraged to prepare for admission and submit an application as early as possible. Applications are processed on a first-come-first-serve basis, with completed applications moving forward in the queue.
Requirements
Applicants must hold a JD, LLB or equivalent degree from the University of Alberta or an institution recognized by the University of Alberta.
Official transcripts can be submitted electronically to transcript@ualberta.ca or sent directly from the issuing institution to the Office of the Registrar:

Applicants with first languages other than English may meet the English Language Requirements based on the university they have attended or the country in which they reside (some conditions may apply). Academic records must be official copies submitted directly from the issuing institution. Additionally, they may meet the English Proficiency requirement by completing one of the following English language tests and meeting the minimum scores required.
Please note that the University of Alberta's ELP requirements are different from the NCA's ELP requirement. You must satisfy both requirements independently for each institution.
TOEFL-iBT (Internet Based Test) Exam
- Tests completed before January 21, 2026: A total score of 100 with a minimum of 25 in each section.
- Test completed after January 21, 2026: A total score of 4.5 with a minimum of 4.5 in each section.
IELTS Academic Exam
- Minimum score of 7.0 overall, with no band below 5.0
PTE Academic Exam
- Minimum score of 68
Duolingo English Test
- Minimum score of 130 with nothing below 105 in any subject.
- Currently valid through to the 2028-2029 admission cycle.
Successful completion of an academic English course through the English Language School from the Faculty of Education and/or the EAP 500 course(s) catalogue.
Transcript needs to show 3 years of full-time instruction in an accredited institution with English instruction (ESL classes do not count), or a degree from an accredited institution with English instruction.
In order to satisfy the ELP requirement through this method, the applicant must submit an official transcript from the home institution sent directly to the University of Alberta. If your institution offers this method, you can submit it electronically to transcript@ualberta.ca.
Documents/transcripts used for ELP must still come directly from the home institution, documents provided through the NCA portal will not satisfy this requirement.

Documentation
Applicants can upload their official NCA Assessment Report through the Launchpad portal. NCA candidates who have submitted documentation to the NCA for review can request that the NCA release documentation to the University of Alberta. Documents released to us can be accessed through a shared portal.
Application
A $150 non-refundable application fee for new students is required, $100 for former University of Alberta students (who took at least one undergraduate class).
Application Status
Successful applicants will be notified by email when accepted for admission.
Students must confirm acceptance by paying a $5,000 tuition deposit.
Students who are not offered admission will be added to the waitlist in the order in which the application was received. Applications will be considered for admission only if all requirements are fulfilled.
