Principal Investigator Eligibility

The Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS2) defines Principal Investigator as: “The researcher who is responsible for the ethical conduct of the research, and for the actions of any member of the research team at a local site.”

Who can be granted the Principal Investigator role in ARISE?

Current Faculty Members

Current Faculty members who are eligible to hold funds per the University’s Eligibility to Apply for and Hold Research Funding Policy Section 3 a and b, may apply as the Principal Investigator (PI) in ARISE.

Other Appointments

Other categories of individuals per Section 4 of the University’s Eligibility to Apply for and Hold Research Funding Policy will require confirmation from their Department Head/Dean that they are able to conduct research. This documentation should be uploaded to the ethics application.

Student and Trainees

Undergraduate students, graduate students and other trainees, including postdoctoral fellows and medical residents are eligible to be named as PI on an ethics applications submitted to REB 1 and REB. Applications to REB 3 and 4 require a Faculty member and/or the Academic Supervisor be the named PI.

External Researchers

Researchers external to the university may be granted PI status, on a case-by-case basis. Please reach out to the REB for further information at ethics@ualberta.ca. External researchers requesting U of A ethics review must provide:

  • Justification for applying at the U of A rather than their primary institution.
  • Evidence of an active research collaboration with U of A faculty.

Affiliated Partner Organizations

Through institutional agreements, the U of A REBs serve as the Board of Record for external or affiliated institutions that do not have designation under the Health Information Act to review research involving identifiable health information including;

  • Alberta Health Services, 
  • Recovery Alberta, 
  • Covenant Health, 
  • Athabasca University 
  • Grant MacEwan University.

The U of A REBs are the board of record for all research conducted by members of the following post-secondary institutions through formal agreements:

  • University of Lethbridge, 
  • Concordia University (Edmonton), 
  • Norquest College, 
  • St. Stephen’s University.
