Ethics Review Process/Timelines
The REB Review Process
1. Submission
Researcher submits application and all supporting documents in ARISE.
2. Administrative Review
REO staff check for completeness before assigning to the REB.
3. Ethics Review
- Delegated review for minimal risk studies
- Full board review for greater than minimal risk studies
4. Revisions (if needed)
Researcher responds to REB feedback, via Reviewer Notes).
5. Approval
Notification of approval is sent via ARISE; research may begin.
REB Turnaround Standards

Minimal risk studies Research is considered minimal risk when the probability and magnitude of harm or discomfort are no greater than those encountered in daily life or during routine physical or psychological tests. Examples:

Greater than minimal risk; requires board meeting Research is greater than minimal risk when participation could expose individuals to higher-than-everyday risks — physical, psychological, social, or legal — or when it involves vulnerable populations or sensitive topics. Examples:

Times represent typical averages of time with the REB and may vary depending on submission volume, completeness, and researcher responsiveness.

- If you’re unsure which category applies, contact the Research Ethics Office before submitting. We can help you determine whether your project meets the threshold for delegated or full board review.
- Submit complete documentation (consent forms, recruitment materials, etc.)
- Use current templates and guidance
- Respond promptly to REB feedback, and answer ALL reviewer notes
- Consult REO staff before submission for complex or multi-site projects
