Welcoming Newcomers Program: Supporting Students Affected by Conflict
The University of Alberta’s Welcoming Newcomers Program supports students arriving through the World University Service of Canada Student Refugee Program (SRP). Through this program, the University of Alberta sponsors students to pursue their studies and provides a network of volunteers to support their transition to life in Edmonton and at the University of Alberta.

The David Turpin and Suromitra Sanatani Award for Refugees and Displaced Persons provides financial support to students participating in the program, helping them focus on their studies as they begin their academic journey at the University of Alberta.

Volunteer with the Welcoming Newcomers Program
Each year, the University of Alberta welcomes three students through the World University Service of Canada Student Refugee Program. Volunteers play a key role in supporting these students as they transition to life and studies at the University of Alberta and in Edmonton.
We recruit volunteers each spring from across the U of A community and beyond, including students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members. Volunteers work together to help students build connections, navigate campus, and feel a sense of belonging.
Volunteer responsibilities
- Welcome students upon arrival (late August or early September)
- Support students in navigating campus and community life
- Provide informal social and peer support
Time Commitment
- One-year commitment
- Connect with a student at least twice per month
- Attend two group activities or dinners per term
Training Requirement
Volunteers must attend a mandatory in-person training session:
June 25, 2026 | 5:00–8:30 pm

This program counts for co-curricular activity points, not as intercultural experience, for students enrolled in the CIL. See this page for volunteer programs that qualify for points.
